Irrigation Scheduling
NAPI
Irrigation research, at the Agricultural Science Center - Farmington, has resulted in the formulation of water-use (evapotranspiration or ET) estimates for various crops grown on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project. These ET estimates, which are based on daily weather data and locally calibrated crop-coefficients, are presented in two separate tables. One is for perennial crops (alfalfa and winter wheat) and the other for annual crops (potates, onions, corn, and pinto beans.) Two ET categories are presented in the table. 'Calculated' ET for the previous week (based on measured weather data) and 'Predicted' ET for the upcoming week (based on historical average weather data)are shown. These estimates are designed to serve as a guide only and are not adjusted for microclimate, irrigation system efficiency, or other crop management factors. Soil moisture should be monitored periodically using a soil-sampling probe or other technique and irrigation amounts adjusted accordingly.
