Ph.D. Dissertation Title: "The Demographic and Genetic Structure of Arid-Land Small Mammal Populations in the Chihuahuan Desert: Feedbacks Between Rodents and the Dynamics of Grassland-Shrubland Ecotones."

Description:

Several factors such as grazing, fires, climate and human activities have changed the landscape in many ways. Sometimes vegetation assemblages are completely different from what they were in the past. In the study area it is demonstrated that a major change in the vegetation composition occurred during the last 90 years. What was grassland is today replaced by shrubland. Such alterations have resulted in major revolutions of the animal communities. The purpose of this research is to investigate the demography and population dynamics of small mammals in the different major habitats that were identified in the study area: shrubland (Mesquite Prosopis glandulosa), grassland and transition zone between them, the ecotone.
