Tributes
The department was well represented in the winners circle when awards and prizes were passed out at the 2003 Joint Annual Meeting of the New Mexico and Arizona Chapters of the Wildlife Society and American Fisheries Societies. Professor Martha Desmond chaired the Wildlife Technical Session and Dr. Colleen Caldwell chaired the Fisheries Technical Session. Catherine Sykes was Program Editor. Seven faculty members and six students from the Department gave research presentations.
Stephanie Haan
One of Professor Desmond’s graduate students, was awarded the $500 Biodiversity Scholarship from the New Mexico Chapter of the Wildlife Society.
Ian Tator
Receives a check for $3,000 as the recipient of the newly established Miles McInnis Memorial Undergraduate Student Award. The presentation took place in Feb. 2002 at the annual meeting of Arizona-New Mexico Chapters of the Wildlife and American Fisheries Societies. Dave Cowley, President of the Arizona-New Mexico Chapter of the American Fisheries Society, and Paul Cassidy, President of Aquatic Consultants, Inc.
Charlie Sanchez
An Adjunct Faculty Member in the Department, won the prestigious Ridley Award in 2001 from the National Fisheries Institute for contributions to the protection and restoration of endangered species sea turtle.

Professor Emeritus, received the "Conservationist of the Year" Award from the Arizona/New Mexico Chapters of the American Fisheries Society.
Clayton Crowder
President, NMSU Student Chapter of American Fisheries Society received the $2500 Miles McInnis Memorial Scholarship.

Wins award for best paper in the Annual Graduate Symposium at NMSU, April 2001.
Danielle D'Auria
Won the award for Best Student Paper at the 2001 Joint Meeting of the Arizona/New Mexico Chapters of the Wildlife Society. The title of her paper was "The breeding biology and social system of a desert adapted species, the Chihuahuan Raven (Corvus cryptolucus). February 2001
Dominique Watts
President of the NMSU Student Chapter of the Wildlife Society won three photo contests including the “Best of Show” in Wildlife Photography.
Alejandro Martinez and Sandra
2001, take first place in the new year with the birth of Hanna Martinez-Micheletto.
Sanford Schemnitz
At the Annual Banquet of the Consolidated Sportsmen of New Mexico, Professor Emeritus Sanford Schemnitz receives the Meritorious Service Award.
Danielle D'Auria
Won the coveted Mike Watts Outstanding Leadership Graduate Fellowship.
