Scholarships

The Department has a number of Scholarships available specifically for majors in Fishery and Wildlife Sciences.

General Scholarship

All the departmental scholarships now use the on-line College Scholarship application form. The application made on-line at the link below. This application is appropriate for incoming freshmen and all current students. Click on the web link below to apply:

Joe Skeen Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) Scholarship

The Joe Skeen Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) Scholarship is a special scholarship/SCEP that is especially well suited for students majoring in Fishery and Wildlife Science and who think they would like a career with Wildlife Services. The form should be filled out and delivered to the Office at the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences in room 132 of Knox Hall. Click on the link for a copy of the application:

  • Description: This Scholarship program provides $3,000 annually ($1,500 per semester) for each student in the program (junior and senior years), plus a paid summer internship with WILDLIFE SERVICES after successful completion of the junior year. Upon Graduation, the student has a 90-day window to be hired noncompetitively by WILDLIFE SERVICES or another branch of the U.S. Government. The program would involve two juniors and two seniors at any given time. WS would be paying partial tuition for four students, but internships for only two. Graduating seniors will be eligible for full-time employment.

  • Qualifications: Students should be enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Home Economics at New Mexico State University, majoring in a field (fishery science, wildlife science, range management, pre-veterinary, entomology, etc.) that would lead to employment with WILDLIFE SERVICES. Students should be in the sophomore year when they apply (application deadline March 1 of each year), and must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75.

  • Application: Completed applications must be submitted to the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences no later than March 1.

  • Selection: A selection committee consisting of representatives from the College of Agriculture and Home Economics, the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences and USDA-APHIS-Wildlife Services will review applications, interview students and select scholarship recipients.

Undergraduate Scholarships

Anthony J. Juliana memorial

  • Description:Anthony J. Juliana Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by Mrs. Lorraine Juliana and friends of her late son Tony Juliana, a senior at New Mexico State University, who died following an accident near Navajo Dam in the summer of 1976. The scholarship is effective at the beginning of the fall semester in August, and pays $300/year.
  • Qualifications:The scholarship is available for the next academic year to a sophomore, junior or senior student majoring in fishery or wildlife science at New Mexico State University. Legal residence in New Mexico is required.
  • Selection:The award is based upon academic excellence and professional promise. Residents of Eddy County, New Mexico, will receive preference.

Aquatic Consultants, Inc.

  • Description:The Aquatic Consultants, Inc. Current Use Scholarship of $1000 is awarded in Spring or Summer for use in the following Fall and is supported by Paul Cassidy and the New Mexico State University Foundation. The award shall be made to one or more students, and shall be renewable.
    • Qualifications:Student must:
    • be a citizen of the United States; New Mexico resident preferred.
    • be a student with a declared major in the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences whose primary interest and study is in Fisheries.
    • be a junior or senior enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours.
    • maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
    • Financial need is a consideration, but the recipient does not need to qualify for federal financial aid.
  • Selection:The Scholarship Committee in the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences shall select the eligible recipients. The recipient may continue to receive the award for more than one year as long as all other criteria are met.

Carol Gordon Memorial

  • Description:The Carol Gordon Memorial Scholarship is awarded in memory of Carol Gordon, who was a Fishery Science major. The award is $400 per year and is paid at the beginning of the fall semester.
  • Qualifications:The award is reserved for sophomore, junior, senior or graduate students who have at least a 3.0 grade point average, and are residents of New Mexico.
  • Selection:Preference will be given to a Fishery Science applicant.

Claude Waner Memorial

  • Description: The Claude Waner (Otero County Wildlife Federation) Scholarship pays $350/year.
  • Qualifications: This award requires that the student be a junior or senior in the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences at New Mexico State University.
  • Selection: First preference is given to residents of Otero County.
  • Dona Ana County Associated Sportsmen

    • Description:This scholarship is donated from the Hubert Esterbrook Memorial Fund and administered by the Doña Ana County Associated Sportsmen. The scholarship will be awarded in variable semester increments of at least $500.00 to be applied to the cost of tuition, books, research needs, etc. Recipients of the scholarship are eligible to compete for a second award by reapplying for the next year.
    • Qualifications: Student must:

      • be a U.S. citizen
      • be a Sophomore, Junior or Senior
      • demonstrate financial need.
      • display a high degree of professional promise including academic record membership in a professional society, participation in local and state organizations, etc.
      • show intent to work for a state or federal natural resource management agency. Continuation of the scholarship for the second semester is contingent upon the recipient remaining in good academic standing (maintaining a 3.0+ GPA).
    • Selection: Preferential consideration is given to natives of New Mexico who are residents of Doña Ana County. Applications will be screened by a representative of the department faculty and two members of DACAS. The top applicant(s) will be recommended to the Board of Directors of the Doña Ana County Associated Sportsmen for approval/final selection. Should a qualified applicant from New Mexico not be found, natives of Western states, and then natives of other states will be considered in order. Selection will be made after considering:

      • Financial needs
      • Professional promise

    Equal value will be given to each of the final selection criteria.

    Elliott Barker

    • Description:The Elliott Barker Memorial Scholarship of $500 is awarded annually by the New Mexico Wildlife Federation.
    • Qualifications:The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior majoring in Fisheries or Wildlife Science. Preference will be given to students who are active outdoor persons (e.g. hunt, fish, hike, camp, etc.), proficient in writing/journalism, with good communication skills, involved with fish and wildlife outside the classroom, and in financial need.
    • Selection:Candidates for this scholarship will be interviewed by Departmental faculty.

    Lloyd O. Haun

    • Description:The Lloyd O. Haun Memorial Scholarship is offered by the Chavez County Wildlife Federation. The scholarship pays $200 per year.
    • Qualifications:The scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior or senior who is pursuing a degree in fishery or wildlife science.
    • Selection:You need not be a resident of Chavez County.

    Mesilla Valley Fly Fishers

    • Description:The Mesilla Valley Fly Fishers Scholarship of $500 per year considers professional promise based on participation in professional societies, work experience and volunteer work for governmental agencies and conservation organizations. Please submit a letter stating your interest in fisheries, and past involvement in fisheries improvement, conservation-related activities and organizations. I ndicate your goals after graduation as they relate to professional
    • Qualifications:This scholarship gives preference to students from New Mexico or the El Paso area (length of residency will be considered), and declared Fishery Science majors at NMSU. Applications will be accepted from other majors in biological and natural resource-related fields. Students must be classified as juniors, seniors or graduate students by the time the scholarship is awarded in the Fall semester.

      Student must:

      • be a U.S. citizen
      • have completed a minimum of 60 semester hours with at least 12 hours as resident (or a minimum of 9 hours for graduate students).
      • attach an informal copy of your most recent nmsu transcript with the application
    • Selection: The Scholarship Committee will consider the following factors in ranking applicants for the MVFF Scholarship:

      • University academic performance with an emphasis on G.P.A. at NMSU (a minimum GPA of 2.5, with preference given to students with a 3.0+).
      • Financial need for the scholarship based on expected financial assistance from all sources.

    Ocie Gray Memorial

    • Description: Ocie Gray Memorial Wildlife Scholarship is sponsored and made available by employees of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish in memory of Ocie Gray, a graduate of NMSU in the class of ’59. He was killed in the line of duty with the Department of Game and Fish when a plane he was riding in crashed on Jan. 4, 1960. This scholarship becomes effective starting with the fall semester each year. The amount of each scholarship will be determined on an annual basis and should provide a significant portion of the cost of tuition each semester. The amount will be paid directly to New Mexico State University. Scholarships may be forfeited if the recipient accepts a work program, or the like, which takes him or her out of school for a period of time, unless prior arrangements have been made with the Director, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.

    • Qualifications: The scholarship is awarded to sophomores, juniors and seniors who are New Mexico residents. The award is made available in the next college year to a resident of New Mexico who is majoring in Fisheries or Wildlife Management at New Mexico State University.

    • Application: Applications are available from the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences, Knox Hall 132, New Mexico State University.

    Completed applications must be submitted to the Department no later than March 1.

    NOTE: Each application must be accompanied by a current transcript. All information requested must be provided for the application to be valid. Passport-size photo and interview are required.

    (Applications from high school seniors applying for the W.A. Bill Humphries scholarship only should be submitted to: Director, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, PO Box 25112, Santa Fe, NM, 87504.)

    Continuation of this scholarship during the second semester is contingent upon the recipients scholastic standing during the first semester and the judgment of the Scholarship Committee as to his or her continued scholastic achievement. Criteria for the selection of recipients will be a combination of need, professional promise and academic record, with none of these factors weighted above the other.

    Phillip Church Memorial

    • Description:The Phillip Church Memorial Scholarship gives $250 per year and is paid at the beginning of the fall semester.
    • Qualifications:This award is given to a female sophomore with at least a 2.5 grade point average.
    • Selection:Preference will be given to a Bernalillo County resident.

    William A. (Bill) Humphries Memorial

    • Description: W.A. "Bill" Humphries Memorial Wildlife Scholarship is sponsored by the employees of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and other friends and associates of Bill Humphries, a twenty-seven year veteran, professional wildlifer, and Assistant Director of the Department, who died while on official duty on December 28, 1973. The amount of each scholarship is determined on an annual basis and should approximate the cost of tuition per semester. The amount will be paid directly to New Mexico State University. The scholarship becomes effective starting with the fall semester each year and pays fall and spring tuition. Scholarships may be forfeited if the recipient accepts a work program, or the like, which takes him or her out of school for a period of time, unless prior arrangements have been made with the Director, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.
    • Qualifications: The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors and University freshmen who are New Mexico residents. It is made available for the next college year to a New Mexico resident majoring in Wildlife Management.
    • Application: Applications are available from the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences, Knox Hall 132, New Mexico State University. Completed applications must be submitted to the Department no later than March 1.

    • Selection: During April of each year, a scholarship committee will select the recipients for each scholarship. This committee will consist of personnel from the NM Department of Game and Fish in consultation with faculty members of the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences, New Mexico State University.

      Continuation of this scholarship during the second semester is contingent upon the recipient's scholastic standing during the first semester and the judgment of the Scholarship Committee as to his or her continued scholastic achievement. Criteria for the selection of recipients will be a combination of need, professional promise and academic record, with none of these factors weighted above the other.

    Graduate Scholarships

    Carol Gordon Memorial

    • Description:he Carol Gordon Memorial Scholarship is awarded in memory of Carol Gordon, who was a Fishery Science major. The award is $400 per year and is paid at the beginning of the fall semester.
    • Qualifications:The award is reserved for sophomore, junior, senior or graduate students who have at least a 3.0 grade point average, and are residents of New Mexico.
    • Selection:Preference will be given to a Fishery Science applicant.

    Doa Ana County Associated Sportsmen

    • Description:This scholarship is donated from the Hubert Esterbrook Memorial Fund and administered by the Dona Ana County Associated Sportsmen. The scholarship will be awarded in variable semester increments of at least $500.00 to be applied to the cost of tuition, books, research needs, etc. Recipients of the scholarship are eligible to compete for a second award by reapplying for the next year.
    • Qualifications:Student must:

      • be a U.S. citizen
      • be a graduate student on thesis program (Plan A) in the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences, NMSU, Las Cruces.
      • have completed at least 9 graduate credit hours prior to receiving the first semester’s award.
      • demonstrate financial need. Preferential consideration given to a student who has no other financial help to conduct thesis research.
      • display a high degree of professional promise including academic record membership in a professional society, participation in local and state organizations, etc.
      • show intent to work for a state or federal natural resource management agency.

      Continuation of the scholarship for the second semester is contingent upon the recipient remaining in Graduate School in good academic standing (maintaining a 3.0+ GPA).

    • Selection: Preferential consideration is given to natives of New Mexico who are residents of Doña Ana County.     Irma Shockley

    • Description: The New Mexico Wildlife Federation shall make an annual cash gift to the New Mexico State University Foundation, Inc. to be used to provide $500 scholarships for New Mexico State University students enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Home Economics, and pursuing a degree in a field of agriculture. Each award shall be for an academic year. Payment of an awarded scholarship shall be divided equally between the semesters of the academic year. The recipient may elect to take the award in cash, as a credit towards tuition, or in any other manner acceptable to the recipient and the Foundation.
    • Qualifications: Recipients must be GRADUATE STUDENTS majoring in Fishery and Wildlife Sciences and having a GPA of 3.5. Financial aid will be considered, but the recipients do not need to be eligible for federal financial aid.
    • Selection: Final selection will be made by Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences faculty.

    John E. Wood

    • Description:The John E. Wood Memorial Scholarship pays $400-$500 per year, and is presented to the recipient at a banquet held in April.
    • Qualifications:The scholarship is awarded to a 2nd year GRADUATE STUDENT. The recipient must be a U.S. citizen.
    • Selection:This award is based on scholarship, need and professional promise.

    Ladd S. Gordon Memorial

    • Description: The Ladd S. Gordon Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Ladd S. Gordon, a former director of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.
    • Qualifications: This scholarship shall be used to make an annual award of $500 to a GRADUATE STUDENT in the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences.
    • Selection:Selection will be made by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.

    Mesilla Valley Fly Fishers

    Other Scholarships Generally Available to Students in

    Boone and Crocket

    • Description:Through its Grants-in-Aid program, the Boone and Crocket Club makes grants to GRADUATE STUDENTS to support research on wildlife, particularly North American big game and their habitat. These grants are provided on a yearly basis.
    • Application:The application form may be found on the website of the Boone and Crockett Club, at http://www.boone-crockett.org. Please click on "Education" on the toolbar near the top of the home page. From there, click on "Grants-in-Aid" to find the application form and program information.

    College of Agriculture Scholarships

    • Description: In addition to the departmental scholarships, the College of Agriculture and Home Economics has numerous scholarships available, not all of which are need-based. The department encourages all students applying for departmental scholarships to also apply for these College scholarships. Hint: It helps to give as much detail as possible concerning extracurricular activities and honors/awards.

    Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation

    • Description: The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Wildlife Leadership Award was established to: “recognize, encourage and promote leadership among future wildlife management professionals.”
    • Qualifications: Applicants must be an undergraduate in a recognized wildlife program; have junior or senior standing; have at least one semester remaining in their degree program at the time of the award; and be scheduled as a full-time student for the fall semester. No previous recipients of this award are eligible.
    • Applications: Applications are to be postmarked no later than March 1. Complete the application form and submit online (paper applications are available in the Deportment office). Stop by the Department office to pickup (1) printed copies of the application you submitted online, and (2) the materials that must be supplied by the Department Head. Combine these materials with two letters of recommendation, and mail to:
