Citizenship Washington Focus

Citizenship Washington Focus is a leadership program for high school youth from across the country. Every summer thousands of young people stay at the National 4-H Center, near Washington, D.C. to participate in this weeklong program. CWF is a program which provides opportunities for youth to broaden appreciation and practice respect for themselves and others in their world; increase individual commitment to citizen involvement; and understand the importance of civic and social responsibilities as they relate to the development of better citizens and leaders. Time is provided for 4-H members to report accomplishments in 4-H to their representatives in the Washington, D.C. area as well as participate in sightseeing trips to the following attractions!

  • Washington National Cathedral
  • FDR Memorial
  • Arlington National Cemetery
  • Iwo Jima Memorial
  • Mount Vernon
  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial
  • Newseum and Freedom Park
  • Korean War Memorial
  • Nightview of Washington

The cost is estimated at $1,200 depending on airline ticket rates. The deadline for first payment of $250 is due October 2, the second payment of $500 is due March 15 with final payment due May 1. The program is open to 4-H members ages 15-19, so get a group of friends together and start raising money for this hands-on opportunity to learn and practice skills that promote "Better Citizens Today. Better Leaders Tomorrow." Contact your County Extension Office for registration information.

New Mexico State 4-H Dog School

The New Mexico State 4-H Dog School was designed to help youth and leaders become familiar with the 4- H Dog Project, the different events youth may participate in with their dogs and to promote Responsible Dog Ownership. State 4-H Dog School is two and a half days of workshops and presentations to help develop leadership, selfreliance, sportsmanship, a greater understanding of their dog and citizenship responsibilities by working together to support community dog projects and activities. 4-H members between the ages of 9-19 may attend Dog School, along with leaders, agents and parents. Dogs do not have to be full breeds to participate in 4-H Dog School, but for the safety of the dog and youth, must be older than 6 months, have all vaccinations, not in season or aggressive.

Senior Leadership Retreat

WHEN: January 18-20, 2008

WHERE: Marriott Hotel on Louisiana and I-40 in Albuquerque.

Registration Fee: $155.00

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: December 15, 2007

The State 4-H Ambassadors and Diplomats prepare and conduct motivational leadership workshops for senior 4-Hers. The only eligibility requirement is to be a senior 4-Her (14-19). Registration must be done through the County Extension Office.

State 4-H Photography Contest

Contest is open to any 4-H member, ages 9-19. Entrants do not have to be enrolled in the Photography project to enter. Entry deadline: Must be in the State Office on or before August 1, 2007.

Photos will be used to promote New Mexico 4-H. An exhibit will be on display at the New Mexico State Fair.

Film and digital photos are accepted.

You may either print out the blank forms and complete by hand, or click into the form just above each line and type the information into each space. If you type into the forms, print 2 copies. Mail one form to the State 4-H Office and save the other for your records:

Youth Get-Away

WHEN: April 18-20, 2008

WHERE: Inlow Baptist Camp

REGISTRATION FEE: $100.00

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: March 28, 2008

Youth Get-Away is hosted each spring by the State 4-H Officers for junior 4-H members. This year it will be held at the Inlow Baptist Camp one hour south of Albuquerque. The only eligibility is to be a Novice or a Junior 4-Her (9-12). Registration must be completed through the County Extension Office.

The National 4-H Congress

WHEN: November 23-27, 2007 WHERE: Atlanta, GA National 4-H Congress is the flagship event of the 4-H program. The conference is open to 4-H members from the United States and its territories. It provides youth (ages 14-19) a quality, educational and cross-cultural experience that exceeds what any state could provide independently. It is designed to address the needs and issues of youth while helping to develop capable, competent, and caring citizens.

The program is built upon the Cooperative Extension System's belief that young people are significant partners in addressing the issues that face our nation, especially those affecting youth. Each year a National Design Team of Extension educators, 4-H youth and 4-H adult volunteers analyze current youth issues and determine the most effective ways to address them. The program combines plenary sessions, seminars, discussion groups, a nationally broadcast town hall meeting, and a service learning experience.

The young people who attend National 4-H Congress come from all strata of our nation's population representing a variety of economic, social and cultural backgrounds. They hail from farms, small towns, suburbs, and cities. They represent all ethnicities. New Mexico youth are selected by submitting a State Recordbook to be judged. The top 15 books selected earn the youth a trip to 4-H Congress.

The program costs in New Mexico are covered by the New Mexico 4-H Foundation. The Coca-Cola Company, Gold Kist, Tyson's Foods, and Zenecca Ag Chemicals have made major pledges supporting the national event.
